We are at a critical intersection in education – a moment where the opportunity gaps are widening for our youth, yet opportunities for economic and societal innovation are growing. The imbalance is evident in the fact that the federal government invests only 0.5 percent of the U.S. Department of Education’s budget in education R&D. We owe it to our children to champion investment, research, and innovation in education to accelerate learning through the creation and scale of evidence-based solutions.

The Alliance for Learning Innovation and Digital Promise are collaborating to launch a national advisory committee to design and elevate an R&D agenda that responds directly to the needs of schools and communities nationwide.

Why This Matters: R&D in education isn’t just about theory; it’s about creating real-world, evidence-based solutions that can transform the learning experience for all students. We need your leadership to help shape this agenda and ensure that education research is focused on what really works for the students, teachers, and communities that need it most. R&D is defined as applied research in real-world education environments focused on developing, testing, and evaluating innovative solutions - tools, products, features, or systems.

We are inviting school district and charter leaders to join us to:

• Define national education R&D priorities
• Amplify the need for state and local R&D investment and infrastructure
• Showcase bright spots where R&D is shifting access, engagement, and outcomes
• Contribute your expertise and ideas to shape policies that can expand the reach and impact of education innovation nationwide.

Commitment:

• The advisory committee will meet virtually once a month for 90 minutes starting in Spring 2025.
• One in-person meeting will be held in the Summer of 2025 (location and date TBD based
• on committee availability).
• Complete meeting pre-work to include readings and reviewing documents
• Participate in opportunities to elevate R&D publicly (two per year)

Application Criteria

We are seeking leaders who:

• Have demonstrated engagement with and/or commitment to research and development practices
• Have ideas for opportunities to expand and/or accelerate the research, design, and implementation of evidence-based solutions.
• Are eager to collaborate with peers to elevate R&D policies, investment, and infrastructure at the federal and local level
• Represent a diversity of geographies and student populations, bringing a range of perspectives and insights to the table.

Who Can Apply:

• Superintendents from public school districts and leaders from charter management organizations
